All I’m saying is “is it really so friggin hard to hit with runners in scoring position?”

Seriously, that’s all I’m saying.

BAD Ollie!

Wow, for someone who was allegedly pitching for his spot in the rotation, that sure was an abortion, wasn’t it? I’m glad that the 2-3 innings I did get to catch were on the FAN; I think it would have been too depressing to actually watch.

Just keep repeating the mantra: Shaking the cobwebs loose… Small sample size… Ommmm…

The SNY guys touched on this but I had been thinking about it since turning on the TV yesterday to find the Nationals in town: this is exactly the kind of reboot we needed to get things back on track.

Nothing better after a couple of craptstic stinkfests than to beat up on someone. Ok, so Friday’s game almost got away (Frankie’s trying so hard to make us all need pacemakers that he must own stock in Medtronics), and today’s game was more about Washington beating up on themselves. But a win’s a win, and as the last two seasons have shown us, every game counts.

It’s encouraging to see Big Pelf come back and not leave in the 4th after giving up 6 runs, and it’s really nice watching Bobby Parnell develop right before our eyes. And that sick, Sick, SICK double play Murphy nailed makes me think that he may just become an outfielder. Even Wright- his defense is so good that I’m ok waiting out his slump… he leaves a lot of ducks on the pond, but he saves a LOT of runs. In fact, I’m curious to know the differential, if it can be measured.

This next week should be absolutely huge- three at home against the Marlins (last licks may come in handy when those mofes just won’t die in the 9th) then three in Philly… Hopefully the Mets can complete the sweep tomorrow. Shouldn’t be too hard- after all, they do have Julian Tavares, who really came up huge for us when he was with the Braves last season.

C’mon, Good Ollie!

Seems like the Mets have been involved in a lot of one-run games so far this season; I think I read the other day that the run differential in their 5 losses has been 6 runs, and even their wins have been nail-biters. I mean this kind of excitement is why I love baseball so much (call it a slow-moving game all you want but never call it boring- I’m still adrenalized after that 9th inning!) but I’m gonna wind up with some kind of condition by September.

How great have these last two games been? Sheff whacked #500, Castillo has been doing exactly what we’d all been riding him for not doing, Johan was just freaking Supernatural again (0.46 ERA? Come on…) And the bullpen! I actually heard them say last night that the Mets’ bullpen has the lowest staff ERA in baseball… After these last two seasons, to hear something like that just HAS to give you hope. (They just showed it on the postgame- 1.80 ERA… Friggin sweet.)

Omar, I must once again apologize to you for wanting to put you on the Acela to DC. Johan goes 7 scoreless innings, Putz and Frankie nail down the 8th and 9th, Mets win. Today’s game was a perfect example of why the things you’ve done just may deliver us a championship.

Looking forward to seeing Nelly Figs out there again tomorrow (wonder where his family’s gonna sit). It’ll also be nice to see Castillo come up big, but mostly because I love watching his postgame interviews to try to figure out which words are actually english and which are Castill-ian. A sweep would be nice, too, so it can be proven that whenever Willie Randolph sits in a dugout in Flushing, it’s the kiss of death. I’d also like to see that meatwad Prince Fielder bellyflop next to first base again… That Shamu impression he did at the end of Friday’s game was spot-on.

Seeya tomorrow!

Hopefully the first of many more to come…

After a couple of games that were pretty much blown because of defensive miscues (though I gotta say, I’ll take a couple of those over a leaky bullpen anyday), it was nice to see Good Ollie show up today and contribute to the first of what, God willing, will be a long list of wins at CiFi.

Other than Dr. Jeckyll notching his first win, other things about tonight’s game that made me happy were Delgado going the other way in the face of the shift then later reaching way down to mash one halfway to Rhode Island, the heads-up home half of the 7th (great plate discipline, nice job by Castillo getting the bunt down, and Reyes scoring from first on a stolen base and three craptastic throws), and, last but not least, getting to see the lovely Mrs. Robinson at the dedication of the Jackie Robinson rotunda. Here’s a link I found which points to a fascinating chronicle of the color line and MLB.

I didn’t realize Delgado was so close to career home run #500… they showed a graphic during the game saying that nobody had ever hit #500 in a Mets uniform… it’s cool how we have two players who could potentially do it this season.

Looking forward to Maine vs. Peavy tomorrow… should be a tough contest.

That was frustrating

Why is it that the Mets have such a hard time with the Marlins? Even when they’re a 3rd place team, the friggin fish just seem to do better against the Mets than against anyone else.

That being said, the Mets weren’t helping their own cause as much as they could, either. Sure, they battled back to tie twice, but 14 men left on base and a paltry 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position? That’s a weak link, and HoJo’s got his work cut out for him.

It’s still way too early to worry, though, even about the relief pitching. They weren’t exactly lights-out tonight, but no bullpen is completely immune to losing a game once in a while. More accurately, though, I felt like the Marlins definitely went out and won that one.

Nice to see Sheff work the walk (even though ball 4 was intentional), I liked what we saw from both Green and Reed, and Beltran played like an MVP tonight.

As an aside, SNY’s Kevin Burkhart interviewed Cantu after the game and I hate to say it, but I like him. He’s affable, uses words like “havoc” (I’m always impressed when foreign-born ballplayers work to gain control over the english language; over the last few years, we’ve been blessed with several in Johan, Delgado, Beltran, Frankie, and the poster child, Pedro). Plus he is one hell of a player. If Delgado doesn’t come back next season and Cantu’s available, I’d love to see him in blue and orange.

Disappointing loss but we can still salvage the weekend.

First the good news: the Mets’ offense scored another six runs and the bullpen was once again being stingy.

Now for some optimism: Ollie doesn’t make a mistake to Votto and maybe, just maybe, the Mets win that one 6-5.

What’s done is done, it’s April, there are still 159 games to play, and other than an outing that went crappy when the wheels came off Ollie’s cart, things are looking pretty good for the Mets.

I’m just pissed that the Marlins opened the season against the blasted Natties. Of COURSE they’re gonna start out 3-0 and ruin our chance at going wire-to-wire.

Whatever. They’ll learn to lose this weekend, won’t they?

2-0!

Thank God for those insurance runs, eh? And that bullpen! I was still close to reaching for the Rolaids but it was pretty remarkable- those were exactly the same kinds of situations last year’s bullpen would not have been able to pitch its way out of. Putz and Frankie might have pushed their luck to the limit but they went and got the job done again! Oh, and while the 9th was playing out, I read that Wagner’s rehab’s going well and that he intends to make the team again this season… His quote was that he knows he’s not going to get any saves but that he just “want[s] to help.” Having JJ and K-rod in the 8th and 9th is sick enough- to have Wagner set the table for them would almost be cruel to opposing teams. Gotta love a guy who wants to win so badly that he doesn’t care about being the closer anymore and will let the team use him wherever he’s needed most. I’ve always thought Wagner was a class act.

And they’re off!

Can’t go wire-to-wire without winning on opening day… And it was awfully nice to see the whole Putz/Frankie combo do exactly what it’s meant to. I really think it’s gonna be a hell of a season.
